The current velocity and sediment properties were examined on the coast of Uchinoura, Wakayama Prefecture to better understand the biomass and morphological variability of Zostera japonica population at former and last luxuriant period. The samples were obtained from intertidal sampling stations on July 20th and September 29th, 2006, former and last luxuriant period, respectively. The results indicate that morphological characteristic of July as the former luxuriant period, when population structure of above-ground is developed, adequately reflects environmental factors. The morphological characteristics of Z. japonica in calm condition with low current velocity and high silt-clay content was long vegetative shoot, sparse stands and low below-/above-ground biomass ratio. The population showing this variability was formed in inner part of the studied area. On the contrary, the population in storm condition, such as outer part of the studied area, had short vegetative shoot, dense stands and high below-/above-ground biomass ratio. In river mouth, the values of environmental factors and population properties were intermediate between the inner and the outer part, but not significantly different from two parts. The result may be due to wide range of variable coefficient suggesting influence of factors not included in this examination, such as siltation and light attenuation by riverine input.
