Abstract
The artificially-made fishery grounds for Manila clam on the northern coast of Isahaya Bay, western Kyushu, were disturbed by two typhoons, each having passed over Nagasaki Prefecture in September of 2005 and 2006, respectively. This study described the changes in the clam populations and substrate conditions within 2 weeks on two (in 2005) and three (in 2006) grounds and in the clam population over three years on one representative ground. In 2005, significant reductions in clam density were recorded for smaller juveniles (2.0-4.9 mm in shell length; two grounds) and larger juveniles (5.0-14.9 mm; one ground). In 2006, such reductions were observed for smaller juveniles (three grounds), and larger juveniles and smaller adults (15.0-24.9 mm) (one ground). Larger adults (≥25.0 mm) were not significantly affected. The variation in the density-reduction patterns among years and sites was ascribed to the direction of the fishery grounds against the prevailing typhoon-induced waves. In the long term, the total clam density fell to 1/3 immediately after the 2006 typhoon, and remained at a low level until July, 2008. Of the substrate conditions, sediment sulfur content and ignition loss tended to be reduced in the short term.
