Abstract

The present status of the Specified Wildlife Management Plans (SWCMP), characterized by adaptive management, for sika deer (Cervus nippon) in Kyushu was reviewed by questionnaires and interviews with administrators in six prefectural offices in Kyushu, Japan. Demographic analysis of deer harvested and population estimation based on pellet count censuses were mainly used for deer population monitoring. During the period from 2000 to 2007, most populations in Kyushu were not reduced by SWCMP controls to the expected size. Both scientific evaluation of population monitoring and examination of deer management plans were carried out in five prefectures by management committees consist of biologists and representatives of many other areas. For managing populations those that distribute across prefectural borders, several meetings and cooperative deer control were held among prefectural governments, forestry agency and agricultural agency. Prefectural and national forestry institutes in Kyushu have carried out cooperative research on deer management. Opinions from administrators in each prefecture were summed up to items on the low reliability of population monitoring, incomplete attainment of management goals and lack of an appropriate budget. For the next period of the SWCMP, more frequent population monitoring, sharing of monitoring data among prefectures, and cooperation among researchers for scientific evaluation is necessary.<br>
