Abstract
A retrospective analysis of the outcome of radiotherapy has been undertaken to know the effectiveness of brachytherapy for oropharyngeal carcinoma. Two-year recurrence-free rates were 73% (100% for T1, 76% for T2) in the patients treated by brachytherapy. The results were not inferior to the results by surgery and was 10% superior to the results by external irradiation. The complication was not frequent and there was no difference in the treatment results for neck metastasis between radiation and surgery. The incidence of second primary cancer was high in the upper aerodigestive tract and the prognosis was poor in patients who had second esophagus or lung cancer.
