The in-process detection of the tool wear is one of the most important technologies in completely automatic operation of machine tool. In earlier works, thus, the cutting force has been measured to detect indirectly the tool wear. This method is, however, not established as yet. In this research, using the tools having flank or crater wear independently, the effect of each wear condition on the dynamic component of cutting force was investigated. In addition, the relationships between the tool normal wear and the dynamic component of cutting force were examined. As a result the following conclusions can be drawn. (1) The flank wear and crater wear show no relation to the amplitude of the dynamic component of cutting force, but they have considerable effects on the spectrum amplitude of cutting force with special frequency. (2) When flank and crater wear exist concurrently, i. e., in the case of the normal wear condition, the effect of flank wear on the spectrum amplitude is superior to that of crater wear. (3) Under wide cutting conditions, the in-process measurement of the tool flank wear can be performed by detecting the spectrum amplitude of cutting force with frequency of 5. 9 kHz, which corresponds approximately with the natural frequency of the tool in bending vibration mode.
