Transient state in a grinding cycle can be analysed by considering the process as the first order system. The behavior of the process is, therefore, represented by the time constant. In this study the time constant in cylindrical plunge grinding was theoretically derived and the influence of grinding as well as dressing conditions on the time constant was experimentally investigated. It was confirmed through the study that the grinding performance affected by the grinding wheel, workpiece and grinding machine could be effectively evaluated by the time constant. Finally, a proposal was made to rationally determine the grinding cycle by using the time constant.
