The finite element method is applied to analyze the mechanism of orthogonal machining. A computer program is developed which is able to calculate the distributions of displacements, stresses and the cutting force distribution on the tool face, using stress-strain relation and yield stress of the material, the friction between chip and tool, and the shape of free surface as input data. Using this program conditions at the start of cutting and the steady state of cutting are simulated, and the following results are obtained.<BR>1) At the beginning of cutting operation, the shear zone does not move gradually forward with cutting tool advance, but from the bigining of cutting the shear zone is placed fairly in front of the tool.<BR>2) At the steady state of cutting the greater part of deformations takes place in the narrow band-like shear zone.<BR>3) As far as the process of material fracture and the generation of machined surface are not precisely analyzed, cutting mechanism are not fully solved with pure-theoretical method.
