説明

The effect of a small amount of sulfur on the machinability of a specially deoxidized free cutting steel, when it is cut with carbide tools, has been studied. The results obtained are as follows:
1. The crater wear of tools when cutting the specially deoxidized steel at high cutting speeds above 100 m/min decreases with increase in the sulfur content of the steel.
2. The force in cutting the specially deoxidized steel decreases with increasing sulfur content at low cutting speeds below 100 m/min, but the change in cutting force is insignifcant at higher cutting speeds.
3. The chips produced from the specially deoxidized steel are more disposable than those from ordinary steel, and the higher the sulfur content of the steel, the cutting speed range producing disposable chips on the specially deoxidized steel becomes wider.
4. The layer formed on the tool face while cutting the specially deoxidized steel with a higher sulfure content is made up of three phases of Fe, MnS and oxides. This oxide layer mainly consists of CaO, AI2O3 and SiO2, with only fractional quantities of MnO and FeO.
