Abstract

Patients with chronic nasal obstruction can experience sleep disturbances or daytime sleepiness. Daytime sleepiness is objectively assessed using electroencephalography in the Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT). However, Bennet et al. recently introduced the Oxford Sleep Resistance Test (OSLER TEST), in which sleep latency is defined as the length of elapsed time before patients fail to respond to seven illuminations. The aim of this study was to examine daytime sleepiness measured using the OSLER TEST in patients with nasal obstruction compared with healthy individuals (controls). The Ethics Committee at Kitasato University Medical Center approved the study. Symptoms of sleep disturbance were determined using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) questionnaire. Sleep latency was measured in the patients and controls as responses to seven flashes of light. The average sleep latency did not differ significantly in patients (28.6±9.4min) and controls (33.7±7.4min), but patients made significantly more mistakes per minute compared to controls. This parameter was also significantly higher in patients with sleep disturbance compared to those without sleep disturbance. These results show that the Osler test is a useful objective tool for evaluation of daytime sleepiness.
