Description

Objective : To evaluate thoracic electrical bioimpedance-based cardiac output (TEBCO) and stroke volume variation (TEBSVV) during surgery.
Methods : During elective abdominal surgery in adult patients, TEBCO and TEBSVV (measured by AESCULON mini®) and arterial pressure-based cardiac output (APCO) and APSVV (measured by FloTracTM) were recorded simultaneously every five minutes. Cardiac outputs and stroke volume variation from two methods were analysed by correlation analysis and Bland-Altman plots.
Result : Nineteen adult patients were studied and 1,084 points were recorded and analysed. The correlation coefficient of the cardiac output was 0.628, with a percentage error of 70%. The correlation coefficient of the stroke volume variation was 0.434, with a percentage error of 100%. In cases of high SVV, the correlation coefficient and percentage error of cardiac output decreased.
Conclusion : Although correlation coefficient between TEBCO and APCO was adequate, its accuracy was inadequate. Therefore, during abdominal surgery, TEBCO is not reliable in hemodynamic monitoring.
