The wear properties of copper-filled polyacetals (POM) have been studied with a thrust washer type testing apparatus under unlubricated condition. The effect of filler and fillergrading on the wear of copper-filled POM is investigated. The mechanism of wear is also discussed on the basis of optical and scanning electron microscopic examinations of the frictional surfaces. The results obtained are as follows : <BR>(1) The wear of copper-filled POM is approximately one half of that of unfilled POM. The wear of copper-filled POM tends to decrease with the larger grading of copper at low pressure and velocity and with the smaller grading of copper at high pressure and velocity.<BR>(2) The PV limit of copper-filled POM is higher than that of unfilled POM and increases with the smaller grading of copper.<BR>(3) It was found that copper grains in the copper-filled POM support slider (opposite material) at the frictional surface for the most part. The effect increases with using larger copper grains as filler and leads to the reduction in the wear. At high pressure and velocity, however, the wear of large copper grains results in a heavy wear of copper grains because of the severe contact against slider.
