説明

The results of several experimental investigations concerning the critical conditions of tool vibrations and the cause of the vibrations with a worn tool edge are described. They indicate that the tool vibration is one of the primary chatters where the vibration occurs without the regenerative effect. The critical condition of the tool vibration is mainly affected by the flank wear, the stiffness of tool shank and cutting area. The flank wear is the most important factor on the tool vibration and there exists the critical wear width to the occurrence of the vibration. There are the lower and the upper critical cutting velocities and the tool vibration occurs at the region bounded by them. From the microscopic obsevations of the cutting surface under vibration, it is considered that the primary causes of the vibration are the negative damping of the friction force at flank surface and the hysteretic cutting force due to the interference of flank surface with the work surface.
