Description
In this paper are reported the development of the egg of Sillago sihama (FORSKÅL), by artificial insemination carried out on July 23, 1953, in Hakata Bay, Kyushu, as well as the prelarval stages up to three days old after hatching.<BR>The egg is spherical, colorless and buoyant, 0.61-0.71 mm in diameter, with an oil-globule of 0.120. 15mm. During the development many melanophores and xanthophores appear on the surface of the embryonal body and on the oil-globule (Fig. G).<BR>The hatching takes place in about twenty hours (water temp.22°-27°C).<BR>The newly hatched larva is 1.3 mm in total length, with an undifferentiated body structure, no pectoral fins nor yet the mouth formed (Fig. I).<BR>The larva about three days old is 2.6 mm in total length, having eight black blotches along the ventral margin of body between the opercle and anus. The yolk is almost absorbed by this time, and the number of myotomes attain 12+22-34 (number of vertebrae 34) (Fig K).
