説明

PO2 of tympanic cavity was measured in human by inserting a PO2 sensor (Clark-type) into the tympanic cavity through the eustachian tube, it was about one-third of ambient pressure. It was elevated on inflation, but showed no change when the eustachian tube was opened by swallowing. According, the changes in tympanic cavity PO2 during sleep were investigated in humans. As a result, PO2 showed no change, but tympanic compliance was elevated. It was assumed from this fact that CO2 is concerned with an elevated in tympanic pressure. Then, The middle ear cavity has repiratory function, and in particular, such function the mastoid cavity, which is large in volume than the tympanic cavity, plays a significant role. It is concluded that this mechanism is a natural protective one, as one of physiological mechanisms of the eustachian tube, which meets the purpose of protecting the middle ear cavity from infections from the pharynx.
