Description
Motoneurons innervating the tensor veli palatini (TVP) muscle and the tensor tympani muscle (TT) in the monkey were examined using the method of retrograde axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP).<BR>Injections of WGA-HRP into TVP produced retrograde labeling of cells ipsilaterally. These labeled cells are clustered in the ventrolateral portion of the trigeminal motor nucleus and are smaller than the masticatory motoneuron. Injections of HRP into TT produced retrograde labeling of cells ipsilaterally. These labeled cells are clustered within the region lateral or ventrolateral to the trigeminal motor nucleus. From these results, it can be concluded that the cells innervating the tensor tympani muscle may arise from the reticular region lateral or ventrolateral to the trigeminal motor nucleus proper and the cells innervating the tensor veli palantini muscle may arise from ventrolateral portion of the trigeminal motor nucleus. Thus we may aspect that there are no interrelation between the two motoneurons.
