Description
Tympanosclerosis is a sequel of chronic otitis media characterized by the deposition of calcareous plaques particularly tympanosclerotic stapes fixation. The aim of study was to analyze hearing results and methods of ossicular reconstruction which affected the stapes mobility. Eighty-five patients who underwent ossicular chain reconstruction due to tympanosclerosis based on stapes fixation in our clinic between 2004 and 2008 were evaluated. The results of treatment and clinical findings of the three patients with tympanosclerosis were presented. Surgical treatment was performed on a total of 85 patients including 65 females and 20 males between ages of 26 and 78. The average preoperative air-bone gap (ABG) was 35.7dB. The average postoperative ABG was 17.0dB. Cases in which stapes footplate was fixated, we prefer to mobilize the fixed ossicles by removal of plaques around the stapes rather than by stapedectomy.
