Chimpanzee experiments and clinical findings showed that patients became HBV carrier state very often after superimposed acute hepatitis type B upon preexisted chronic non-A, non-B (NANB) hepatitis. Immune abnormalities may coexist which alter their responsiveness to vaccination. This study compares the immune response to plasma-derived hepatitis B vaccine in the patients with NANB hepatitis and healthy controls. By the seven month after the initial vaccination, 42.9% in NANB hepatitis and 81.8% in controls had a response of HBs antibody. The titer of HBs antibody was significantly lower in NANB hepatitis than in controls. In non-responders with NANB hepatitis, significant lower lymphocytes count and higher OKT4/OKT8 ratio were observed as compared to responders.
