Abstract

A morphometric method was developed to estimate the arterial blood flow Q of the liver from the anatomical radius R of the proper hepatic artery. Q was calculated from the equation Q=k"·Rn, where k" was a constant and n a function of age, increasing linearly with the advancement of aging. 32 cases of cirrhosis, 3 cases with non-cirrhotic Banti liver and 66 control cases were selected from the autopsy material and were submitted to the analysis. In comparison to the non-cirrhotic subjects, the estimated Q was larger in the group of cirrhosis, but at the same time there was an increased scatter of Q among the cases. In cirrhosis, a positive correlation was demonstrated between the estimated Q and the interstitial volume of the liver Vi, while Q did not depend upon Vp, the parenchymal volume. Regarding Vi as the rough index of the development of by-passing capillary channels in the interstitial region, the increased Q in cirrhosis was considered merely to correspond to the amount of intrahepatic shunt flow.
