Abstract

Fasting serum bile acid levels (FSBA) were determined by the gas-liquid chromatography in six patients with constitutional hyperbilirubinemias and in two patients with constitutional indocyanine green (ICG) excretory defect.
FSBA revealed within normal range (0.60±0.53μg/ml n=9) in Gilbert's (G) syndrome, DubinJohnson (D-J) syndrome and constitutional ICG excretory defect, whereas FSBA were higher (3.07-4.74μg/ml) in Crigler-Najjar (C-N) syndrome Type II and Rotor's hyperbilirubinemia (R Type).
Postprandial serum bile acid levels (PSBA) were measured at two hours following having of two eggs in each one patient with G syndrome, D-J syndrome, R Type and constitutional ICG excretory defect. PSBA was significantly increased in D-J syndrome and increasing rate was 136%.
There were significant correlations between serum bile acid levels and serum bilirubin concentrations, ICG plasma disappearance rate, ICG plasma retention rate, BSP plasma disappearance rate and BSP plasma retention rate.
From these results it was concluded that the hepatic transport of bile acids was specifically different in constitutional hyperbilirubinemias.
