<jats:p>The <jats:styled-content style="fixed-case">I</jats:styled-content>ntractable <jats:styled-content style="fixed-case">L</jats:styled-content>iver <jats:styled-content style="fixed-case">D</jats:styled-content>iseases <jats:styled-content style="fixed-case">S</jats:styled-content>tudy <jats:styled-content style="fixed-case">G</jats:styled-content>roup of <jats:styled-content style="fixed-case">J</jats:styled-content>apan, supported by the <jats:styled-content style="fixed-case">M</jats:styled-content>inistry of <jats:styled-content style="fixed-case">H</jats:styled-content>ealth, <jats:styled-content style="fixed-case">L</jats:styled-content>abor and <jats:styled-content style="fixed-case">W</jats:styled-content>elfare, established novel diagnostic criteria for “acute liver failure” in 2011. In these criteria, patients without histological findings of hepatitis are included in the disease entity of “acute liver failure”, as in <jats:styled-content style="fixed-case">E</jats:styled-content>urope and the <jats:styled-content style="fixed-case">USA</jats:styled-content>. In this report, classification criteria for the etiologies of “acute liver failure” in <jats:styled-content style="fixed-case">J</jats:styled-content>apan are proposed.</jats:p>
