Abstract

A new method for the electrophoretic separation of isoenzymes of γ-glutamyl transpeptidase was described. The electrophoresis was performed on a Pol-E-film system.
The method was permitted the separation of up to 3 different fractions, which were called GT1, GT2 and GT3, having electrophoretic mobilities compable to that of albumin and α1-globulin α2-globulin and β-globulin respectively.
Ninety eight serum specimens with various diseases of the liver and biliary tract were studied, and in all of them the diagnosis was confirmed by clinical diagnosis, biopsy, laparotomy and autopsy.
In zymograms, augmentation of GT1 fraction was found in most cases of the liver parenchymal damage and lithiasis of the common bile duct, while that of GT2 and GT3 fractions in some cases of the extrahepatic obstruction due to carcinoma.
This isoenzymic separation method may be employed routinely in the clinical laboratory.
