Description

A 61-year-old man received a medical check at another hospital in November 2014. Ultrasonography (US) showed a hypoechoic lesion, 14 mm in diameter, in segment 6 of the liver. On images of abdominal computed tomographic (CT) scan and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the lesion was suspected to be a hepatic hemangioma. After one year, On US, CT and MRI findings, the lesion was 80 mm in diameter. F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) accumulation in peripheral of the lesion was higher that in the liver parenchyma on FDG-PET. These findings suggested the lesion as malignant tumor. We performed right posterior hepatectomy. Histopathological examination of the resected lesion showed a final diagnosis of hepatic angiosarcoma. FDG PET was helpful to differentiate malignant hepatic tumor and benign tumor. The patient survived without the evidence of recurrence for 8 postoperative months.
