Abstract

We encountered a case of primary squamous cell carcinoma of the liver, which was confirmed at autopsy. A 59-year-old man was admitted to our hospital for fever and epigastric pain. An inflammatory response and elevation of hepatobiliary enzyme levels were observed. An 8-cm tumor was identified in the right lobe of the liver, and it occluded the common bile duct. We performed an urgent Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). Squamous cell carcinoma was found upon cytological examination. The tumor invaded the duodenal bulb and formed a tumor colon fistula. Because the tumor was widely spread, radical resection was impossible. We first made a colostomy and subsequently performed a gastrointestinal bypass and placed a metal stent in the bile duct. We also treated him with systemic chemotherapy; however, the patient died. We performed an autopsy and found that the tumor was a squamous cell carcinoma.
