Abstract
The clinical value on the diagnostic criteria of the endoscopical findings of the esophageal varices which was proposed in 7th surgical society for the study of the portal venous system was debated uppon the follows-whether we could know the critical situation of the bleeding from the esophageal varices and how to treat the patient with esophageal varices. The results were summarized as follows.
1) Arecording card: When a pattern of the branching capillary vessels in the esophageal mucosa, a grade of esophagitis, gastric erosion and gastric ulcer were recognized, the recording card was useful to know whether the case bleed or not
2) The classification in stage of esophageal varices;
a) It was not always correlated with a frequency of bleeding from the esophageal varices.
b) It was useful to determine how to treat a patient with esophageal varices, that is, the tortuous or tubercled (=higher grade than F2) blue varices and the varices with small hemangioma on its surface (=stage III) should be operated, and the another cases could be controled safely by medical treatment (non-operative treatment).
c) The case classified in stage IV was changeable to in stage I, II or III, after the erosion on the esophageal mucosa was cured, so, stage IV shouldn't be considered the same term of stage I, II and III. The erosion had better be noted on the remarks column.
