Ageing changes, particularly the process of the hair loss and the cystic formation in the skin of hairless mice (hr) were directly examined with the scanning electron microscope as well as the light microscope. Epidermal sheets and vertical sections were also available. On the about twelveth day after birth, the hair loss begins from the head, gradually develops backwards. At the hair loss, a widening of hair canal was first observed, and a subsequent irregular shortening of the follicle might occur. After the hair was lost, keratotic scales on the surrounding area of hair canal showed lamellar pattern, the follicles showed an irregular crater-like appearance, and then gradually became to be filled up with keratotic scales. Split skin preparation showed that the underside of the epidermis was almost flattened out except follicular projection with linear distribution. After the hair was lost, these follicles gradually became shorter and globular, and these histological changes suggest the formation of the sebaceous gland. On the about twentieth day after birth, entire body is denuded with only the vibrissae remaining. At the beginning of two months of age, the skin became thicker and many epithelial cysts were formed at the lower part of dermis and the subcutaneous fatty tissue. Vertical sections at three months of age showed that shortened follicular canals were filled up with keratotic scales, and many epithelial cysts were like spherical cavity. The hair growth of hairless mice was similar to that of the hairy mice in anagen for ten days after birth.
