Description
We have investigated the effect of aging on women's scalp hair (density and texture) by image analysis using the videomicroscope (Scalar CO., LTD). Four photographys were taken on both the parietal and occipital scalp regions of each of 150 female subjects aged between 16 and 59 years. From these photographs, average number of hair groups/cm2, total scalp hairs/cm2, total coarse (terminal) hairs with over 40μm in diameter/cm2, average number of scalp hairs/hair group, and average number of coarse hairs/hair group were calculated respecitively.
We thought total coarse hairs/cm2 as index of estimating the scalp hair volume of each subject, and the figures obtained by dividing the avearage number of parietal coarse hairs/cm2 by those of occipital coarse hairs/cm2 were used as indices estimating the thinness of the scalp hair volume.
It was found that the average number of scalp hairs per hair group decrease with age in the women aged over 40 years. This was particulary evident in the average number of coarse hairs/hair group, suggeesting that the thinness of women's parietal scalp hair progresses strikingly after the age of 40.
A relation with the declining level of female sex hormones after the age of 40 will be discussed in the progression of the thinness of women's scalp hair.
