Abstract

<p>Air-void systems in concretes were investigated in terms of spatial point processes. To analyze the spatial structure of air voids routinely, the R of a free software environment was used for evaluating and simulating air-void systems in different concrete mixtures. The package “spatstat” for general spatial point processes was applied to air voids appeared in cross sections of concretes. Simulated patterns of air voids were compared with real distribution of air in the cross sections of concretes. It was easy to combine image analysis data of the voids with the R package. Using R, spatial statistics functions such as L function were easily obtained for real air void structure in concretes. Generally, air void-system in concrete looks clustered due to aggregate particles. However, comparison of real air-void system with the virtual structure simulated as binomial processes suggested that the null hypothesis of Poisson process could not be discarded. This means the real spatial structure of air voids can be easily represented as random points in 2D random fields. Furthermore, a characteristic distance defined in the nearest-neighbor distance function for those air voids agreed quite well with the conventional spacing factor in ASTM C457. The procedure to calculate the distance can be used as an alternative way to obtain the conventional spacing factor easily.</p>
