Description
Changes of the muscle fibers in the M. tibialis anterior of rats after the denervation of N. ischiadicus were observed and were compared with those of non-denerved side. The decrease rate of muscle weight after the denervation, 27.9 % in 10 days, 50.9 % in 20 days and 68.3 % in 30 days, and the cross-sectional areas of the muscle belly decreased also at the same rate of the muscle weight. The mean size of the 3 types of muscle fibers, which were differentiated by Sudan Black B stain, followed an ascending order of white muscle fiber>intermediate muscle fiber>red muscle fiber in both denerved and non-denerved side. The differences of the mean size between the 3 types of muscle fibers, however, began to lessen accompanying the progress of the term after the denervation. The decrease rate of the thickness of muscle fibers, therefore, was the largest in white muscle fibers, the second-most in intermediate muscle fibers and the smallest in red muscle fibers. There was no difference of mean size between the intermediate fiber and the red fiber, and was a difference of 1.6: 1 between the white fiber and the red fiber 30 days after the denervation, respectively. As the structural changes and the hypertrophy of the nuclei of muscle fiber with a clear nucleoli were often present in the central part of muscle fiber at the early stage of the denervation. An increase of the interstitual connective tissue with lymphatic infiltration was found in 10-20 days of the denervation. As signs of denervation of long duration, there were the decrease of interstitual connective tissue, winding and the disappearance of striated structure of muscle fiber and the exhibiting of vacuola in muscle fiber.
