This study aims at establishing the Health Indices useful for epidemiological evalution of health conditions and factors which influence upon them in a community. All the data employed in this study are obtained from the results of health survey which have been conducted on the rural inhabitants in Tochigi prefecture from 1973 to 1975.
Health Indices such as “health consciousness”“subjective symptoms”“ anamneses of disease”“total number of yes in CMI questionnaire”“typing of CMI by Fukamachi's method”“results of health examination” and “frequency of medical consultation” were tentatively proposed by the author.
Usefulness of these Health Indices was evaluated by the data on morbidity obtained from the national health insuarance scheme.
The morbid conditions which were followed up during the period of 3 years are “Respiratory diseases”“Cardiovasculer diseases”“Diseases of digestive organs” and “ Muscloskeletal disease ”.
Among these diseases, incidence of chronic illnesses such as Cardiovasculer and Muscloskeletal diseases was closely correlated to each health level classified by the above-said Health Indices particulerly by anamneses of disease, frequency of medical consultation. Acute morbid conditions such as respiratory diseases and diseases of digestive organs were slightly correlated to the health level mentioned above.
An epidemiological relationship between the Health Indices and socio-economic factors was also examined by the method of multiple regression analysis. Furthermore, factors and each Health Index was combined by the method of cannonical analysis.
A combined Health Index thus obtained was closely correlated to and each level of socio-economic factors, particularly to income level, smoking and drinking habits in the age group of 60 years and over, although the correlation was not distinct in the age group of less than 60 years.
It is thus concluded that Health Indices which are correlated to socioeconomic factors are useful for evalution of health conditions and living environments.
