Abstract
Persistent sciatic artery aneurysm is so rare that the sciatic artery which plays the important role in the embryonal development of the lower limbs persists after birth to form an aneurysm. The disease has been treated by surgical procedures including resection of the aneurysm, ligation, and revascularization of the lower limbs if necessary. However, with a recent progression in interventional radiology (IVR), clinical cases treated by transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) have been increasingly reported.
We experienced a patient with persistent sciatic artery aneurysm with a variety of previous histories.
A 78-year-old woman was presented with a pulsatile and painless mass in her right gluteal region. She had no history of trauma.
Angiography revealed an aneurysm arising from the right persistent sciatic artery without demonstrable continuity with the popliteal artery. The right superficial femoral artery was absent and the popliteal artery was connected with the deep femoral artery via small collaterals at the trifurcation. These findings established the diagnosis of an “incomplete” type of persistent sciatic artery aneurysm.
Under angiographic control, the feeding proximal artery was completely embolized by steel coils. The postoperative course was quite uneventful without any complications.
Transcatheter arterial embolization for persistent sciatic artery aneurysmis an easy, safe and lessinvasive method.
