Description

An asymptomatic 63-year-old man was found to have an abnormal shadow on a chest X-ray done as part of a routine medical examination. On computed tomography, a nodular lesion was found in the right upper lobe ; lung cancer was strongly suspected. The bronchoscopy was non-diagnostic. The lesion was resected during a thoracoscopic lobectomy. On histology, pulmonary histoplasmosis was diagnosed. A number of round-shaped mycotic bodies with granulomatous lesions were found in both the pulmonary lesion and the dissected hilar lymph nodes. Since histoplasmosis may sometimes recur, this patient will need to be followed.
