The effects of film-dressing management without disinfection and gauze exchange as a treatment for postoperative surgical wounds were studied. A total of 42 patients with colon cancer who had undergone open surgery at the hospital between April 2003 and March 2005 were enrolled in the study (study group). They were investigated for background of the patient, incidence of surgical site infection (SSI), days requiring total suture removal, times of wound treatment, and costs for dressing the wound compared with other 42 patients who underwent open colon resection before March 2003 (control group). The incidence of SSI in the study group was 9.5% which was slightly lower than that of the control group whose value was 14.3%. The days requiring total suture removal, times of wound treatment, and costs for dressing the wound in the study group were 7.9 days, 5.1 times, and 2562 yen, respectively, which were significantly lower in every respect than those of the control group whose values were 8.9 days, 8.7 times, and 4297 yen, respectively. It can be concluded that dressing without disinfection treatment for surgical wounds may be more effective than the conventional method with disinfection and gauze exchange in the management of postoperative surgical wounds.
