A 69-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because he was pointed out having a right lower abdominal tumor at a screening abdominal CT scan. With various examinations, a retroperitoneal tumor was diagnosed and the tumor was removed. During operation, the tumor was situated in front of the iliopsoas muscle, and its head and tail sides were connected by a cord about 5mm in diameter. Furthe the head side cord progressed in the direction for the 3rd and 4th lumber vertebrae. Based on macrscopic morphology of the tumor and the course of the cord, retroperitoneal schwannoma of the femoral nerve was diagnosed. To preserve nerve fibers, an enucleation of the tumor was performed, Immudiately after the operation, a mild sensory disturbance was felt at the inside of the right thigh, but it completely disappeared in several days. Histopathological diagnosis was benign schwannoma with concomitant presence of Antoni type A and B.<br> Retroperitoneal schwannoma arising in the femoral nerve is extremely rare, and case reports of the disease were numbered only 13 including this case report in Japan.
