Abstract

A partial small intestine resection was performed for an 85-year-old female with a strangulated ileus in August 2010. The postoperative course was clinically uneventfurl except for the worsening of the patient's anemia and thrombocytopenia whose presence was already noted preoperatively, and for the appearance of undifferentiated cells in the differential leukocyte count. On September 22nd. the patient developed a high grade fever and a prolonged inflammatory reaction. The bone marrow examinations and the chromosomal study which were performed revealed chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMMoL). Given the patient's age and general condition, supportive care including blood transfusion was given. The patient died on November, 19th. This is a rare case with CMMoL leading to blast crisis resulting in death due to excessive operative stress.
