Abstract

A 33-year-old Korean women had a laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) for morbid obesity in Korea, 1 year previous. After 6 months, she had another operation to remove the gastric band but the operation failed to remove the gastric band, because the band had migrated to the lumen of the stomach. She was admitted to our hospital complaining of abdominal pain. An enhanced computed tomography (CT) showed a small intestinal obstruction caused by a foreign body. Then we performed an emergency laparotomy to remove the foreign body. We identified the foreign body was the gastric band, which migrated into the stomach lumen. This present case is the first case to be reported of a migrated gastric band after LAGB causing a small intestinal obstruction in Japan.
