Abstract

A 20-year-old woman who had had recurrent episodes of right-sides abdominal pain since 19 years of age visited a neighboring hospital and was suspected to have multiseptate gallbladder. She was referred to our hospital. Blood biochemical tests showed no inflammatory findings, and serum levels of hepatobiliary enzymes and tumor markers (CEA, CA19-9) were in normal limits. Imaging studies showed septations in the entire area within the gallbladder lumen. Multiseptate gallbladder was diagnosed. There were no findings suggestive of gallstones, nodular lesions and biliary sludge. As the patient was symptomatic, she was considered to be a candidate for surgical resection. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy was performed. We confirmed a grapelike cluster of the gallbladder and multiple septa in the gallbladder lumen. The gallbladder septa were lined by tall columnar epithelium, and such an image as the proper muscular layer of the gallbladder wall shifted to the septa was seen. No inflammatory changes and atypical cells were seen in the epithelium.<BR>Multiseptate gallbladder is a very rare congenital anomaly of the gallbladder and so this case is reported here together with a review of the literature.
