Abstract

Shortage of surgeons has become a social problem and this situation is expected to be improved immediately. In order to reveal some problems occurred in clinical working field, we have made a questionnaire survey by sending the form to surgeons working at hospitals in Oita prefecture and have clarified main causes of making them feel that “more surgeons are needed”.<BR>The contents of the questionnaire form included working environment, working load and welfare program, and the number of questions came to 31 in total. We enrolled 179 surgeons out of 211 who filled the questionnaire form (response rate was 91%) working at facilities except universities.<BR>As a result, surgeons who were over 40 years old, were working at a hospital with more than 100 beds, participating in more than five operations in a week (actually performing more than three operations) , and taking charge of 11 inpatients or more felt that more surgeons were needed.<BR>This result would be invaluable information for Universities posting doctors and for hospital employers.
