Abstract

Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) has become the standard surgery in the treatment of breast cancer. Reduction of postoperative complications is important for the patients to improve the QOL after the surgery.
We investigated the efficacy of ultrasonically activated coagulating shears (UACS) for reduction of the seroma formation after SLNB in a total of 173 breast cancer patients, compared with using Electric scalpel as control. UACS was used in 85 patients (the UACS group) and electric scalpel was used in the remaining 88 patients (the control group). UACS significantly reduced the seroma formation to 13% (11/85 cases), compared to 34% (30/88 cases) in the control group. The frequency of fine-needle aspirations of seroma in UACS group (1.7 times) was significantly lower than the control group (2.0 times). Compared with the control group, a significantly lower incidence of seroma formation was noted in obese patients whose BMI values were more than 25 or in those who were removed more than 4 lymph nodes at SLNB in the UACS group.
We conclude that UACS is useful in prevention of postoperative seroma formation after SLNB.
