Abstract

The patient was a 67-year-old woman. A contrast-enhanced CT scan conducted for pollakiuria revealed a space-occupying lesion in the mediastinum. The lesion was neoplastic and was located between the middle thoracic esophagus and the left main bronchus. It was 32 × 21 mm in diameter, was poorly enhanced and had a relatively homogeneous center. The margin between the left main bronchus and the lesion was indistinct, and a hemisphere projection into the esophageal lumen was observed. T1-weighted MRI images showed uniform hypointencity and T2-weighted images showed mild hypointencity, suggesting the highly viscous fluid components. Based on the above, we diagnosed the patient as having a bronchogenic tumor, and performed thoracoscopic-assisted surgery via the left transthoracic route. Dissection of the tissues surrounding the tumor disclosed that the tumor was originated from the esophagus. The intraoperative diagnosis was submucosal esophageal tumour and a partial esophagectomy was performed. Since the resected tissue was histopathologically positive for both CD117 and CD34, gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST) of the esophagus was diagnosed.<BR>In the present case, a thoracoscopic-assisted partial esophagectomy via the left transthoracic route was performed to treat an esophageal GIST.
