Description
Resection of peritoneal recurrence of colorectal carcinoma seems to be avoided in general practice. Since we have found that peritoneal carcinomatosis is not so frequent in the case of colorectal carcinoma and only a few nodules were present in many cases, peritoneal nodule resection has been our treatment of choice since 2000. Here we analyze the long-term outcome of our series of operations.
[Subject] Since 2000, 101 resections were performed curatively (R0/R1) on 80 patients diagnosed as having peritoneal seeding from colorectal carcinoma. During the same period, 45 operations were performed, which ended up with R2 resection.
[Result] The average age was 61.6 years, and the male/female ratio was 46:34 for the R0/R1 group. The median number of resected nodules was 3 (range: 1 to 70). Postoperative overall 5-year survival rate was 26.5% in the curative group. In the peritoneal metastasis alone group, the survival rate was 34.2%. In the R2 group, the longest survival was 34.0 months, and MST was 12.0 months.
[Conclusion] Peritoneal nodule resection could be indicated in colorectal carcinoma, unlike other primary organs, provided R0/R1 operation is performed.
