Abstract
Pruritus ani is a common symptom in anal diseases. We approached it from a dermatological standpoint. Ninety-four cases of pruritus ani were selected for study during 2003, and all 94 cases (100%) recovered successfully. Skin lesions and itching of pruritus ani are mainly caused by the patient's scratching. To subdue itchiness, steroid ointment is quite effective. However, it is necessary to develop a definite method to avoid the problems of rebound and other side-effects if steroids have been used for a long time ; sudden termination often causes rebound.<BR>In our study cases, steroid ointment was prescribed for the patients so as to gradually reduce the effect of the steroid over a span of 3 weeks. Together with the external treatment, it was useful to offer counseling on the related area of daily life routine.
