A Case of Pulmonary Carcinosarcoma Coexisting with Pulmonary Hamartoma

Abstract

A 63-year-old man had a pulmonary nodule in the right upper lobe which slowly grew in 40 months and a new pulmonary mass in the right lower lobe was pointed out. Since he was a smoker, it took two months until he stopped smoking and then he received a bronchoscopy. The lower lobe mass had rapidly grown in these 2 months, and was diagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma by a transbronchial lung biopsy. Subsequently, surgical resection was performed with the suspected diagnosis of pulmonary hamartoma of the right upper lobe and squamous cell carcinoma (cT2bN0M0) of the lower lobe, and the upper lobe nodule and the lower lobe mass were histologically diagnosed as pulmonary hamartoma and carcinosarcoma, respectively. This carcinosarcoma consisted of squamous cell carcinoma and chondrosarcoma. It has been reported that pulmonary hamartoma often coexists with lung cancer. But, to the best of our knowledge, the coexistence of pulmonary hamartoma and carcinosarcoma has not been previously reported. In this report, we describe a rare case of pulmonary carcinosarcoma coexisting with pulmonary hamartoma.
