Abstract

A case of rectal cancer associated with pyometra was reported.
A 64-year-old woman was admitted with complaints of lower abdominal pain, high fever and purulent vaginal discharge. Blood laboratory test were normal except for an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (81/117) and leucocytosis. Body CT, barium enema and sigmoidoscopy revealed a stenotic area of 6 cm in length in the rectosigmoid colon and a fistula between rectum and uterus. At laparotomy, the tumor infiltrated into the uterus, and low anterior resection and hysterectomy were performed. Histologically, the tumor was well differen-tiated adenocarcinoma and invaded the myometrium and right ovary.
The patient died of severe acidosis due to intravenous hyperalimentation.
