- Psychosomatic Study of Subjective Complaints in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus

Subjective complaints of diabetic patients were psychosomatically studied. For this purpose, 37 diabetic and 86 non-diabetic patients were classified into 4 groups : 1) Group A, 30 diabetics free of psychological factors; 2) Group A', 7 diabetics with psychological factors; 3) Group B, 38 non-diabetics with psychological factors and Group C, 30 non-diabetics free of psychological factors. Their subjective complaints were evaluated by a questionnaire consisting of 17 questions.1) The number of subjective complaints was greater in Group A' and B than in Group C, bot not than in group A.2) The number of subjective complaints was studied in Group A, as a function of the fasting blood sugar level, with the result of no significant correlation between them. The number of subjective complaints was greater, however, in patients with neurotic pattern or depressive tendency on psychological test of CMI and SDS.3) Psychosomatic medicine about diabetic mellitus in the past was mainly concerned with neurotic or depressive tendency that was seen in diabetics with psychological factors, but authors noticed that lacking in subjective complaints.4) Treatment for subjective complaints of diabetics by means of bio-feedback of the blood sugar level is worthy of consideration.
