Description

We evaluated the emotional states of 214 patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) using the POMS (Profile of Mood States) questionnaire, to investigate the relationship between their mental states and their psychiatric diagnoses, the severity and duration of AD. The subjects were categorized into four groups : (1) "no psychiatric diagnoses" (n=120), (2) "psychological factors affecting medical condition (n=64)", (3) "adjustment disorders (n=10)", and(4) "other psychiatric diagnoses (n=20)". The results showed the following. 1) Emotional states of those who have no psychiatric diagnoses were estimated similar to healthy controls. 2) The TMD (total mood disturbances) scores of those with psychological factors and other psychiatric diagnoses were higher than the TMD of those without diagnoses. 3) The diagram of six items on POMS differed in each group categorized by psychiatric diagnoses. The diagram of those who have psychological factors indicated lower vigor and higher fatigue, while that of those with other psychiatric diagnoses showed higher tension-anxiety, depression and dejection, and confusion. 4) No correlation was recognized between emotional states and the severity or duration of AD in this study.
