Description
As a series of studies in our laboratory, the distribution of nutrient arteries in skeletal muscle of the human body is investigated. In this paper, gastrocnemius muscles of triceps surae muscles of ten Japanese adults' bodies with twenty side cases are examined to explore the origin of nutrient arteries, the branching condition and the distribution area in this muscle. This muscle normally consists of sural artery, that is the branch of popliteal artery (Po) (Type I), and furthermore there are some cases the branch of posterior tibial artery is distributed in the lower portion after going through soleus muscle (Type II). We classify it into two types : i.e. only the independent branch from Po is distributed in both side heads respectively names Type a and the common branch is distributed names Type b. Each type has the following ratio of appearances ; Type I-a has 35%, Type I-b 40%, Type II-a 15% and Type II-b 10%. Fabella is observed in ten side cases at original tendon of the lateral head and M. gastrocnemius tertius, the same as variational muscle, is observed in two cases.
