Abstract

The importance of palliative care including psychosocial aspects from the initial stage of treatment for cancer patients has been a particularly noteworthy topic. Cancer patients complain of various pains associated with cancer itself, somatization of psychological distress, side effect of chemotherapy and so on. In the palliative care for cancer patients, it is important to treat total pains from the standpoint of holistic and team medical care. Therefore I consider that psychosomatic physicians practicing the bio-psycho-socio-ethical approach, that is, holistic medical care can play an increasingly prominent role in this field. In this paper, I would like to show our activity of palliative medicine at The University of Tokyo Hospital, and then discuss the role of psychosomatic physicians with reference to case presentation.
