説明
We assessed the mental development of 13 hearing-impaired children with low birth weights under 1, 500 g. Weight at birth ranged from 398 to 1, 460 g, and gestational age at birth ranged from 24 to 32 weeks. Development or intelligence tests were administered to the subjects. DQ or performance IQ scores ranged from 5 to 107, with 10 subjects (77%) scoring below 80. The frequency of mental retardation (DQ, PIQ<80) among the subjects was significantly higher than among 49 children with especially low birth weights under 1, 000 g. Three subjects with normal performance intelligence (PIQ>85) showed poor language development in spite of intensive language training. Two of them, each born a twin, had lower PIQ scores than their hearing twin siblings, while the other subject showed certain deviant behavior characteristics. Their language delay is assumed to be related to deficits in their cognitive ability.<BR>In conclusion, it appears highly likely that hearing impairment in children with low birth weights under 1, 500 g is accompanied by developmental delay or a cognitive deficit.
