Description

An object-oriented acoustic analysis system was developed to assess vocal controllability and to evaluate the acoustic effects of medical care of the voice. Using the system, slow and fast variations in vocal fundamental frequency as well as other acoustic aspects were analyzed for normal/modal, pathological and singing voices. All pathological groups showed larger variations in F0, or lower controllability, than the normal controls. Significant improvements in vocal characteristics were found after surgical treatment in patients with Reinke's edema. These results suggest that the acoustic approach is a useful way of evaluating vocal controllability for various voices, including pathological and artistic super-normal voices.
