Description

The glycated albumin (GA) level in 414,909 blood donors in Japan was analyzed in relation to sex, age and body mass index (BMI). As donor age increased, the proportion of donors with GA ≥16.5% increased both in males and females. The mean GA level in young donors decreased with BMI within the normal GA level range. In donors ≥30 years of age, the mean GA level increased with age even in the subpopulation with a low BMI, whereas both the proportion of donors with GA ≥16.5% and the mean GA level increased with age in the subpopulation with a high BMI. It is suggested that even in the young generation, the risk of having diabetes mellitus will increase after 30 years of age if the state of having a BMI ≥30 lasts for a long time. It was also found that people with low to normal BMI represent 60% of those with GA ≥16.5%, indicating the presence of a considerable number of people with impaired glucose tolerance in Japan. The measurement of GA level in all blood donors will greatly contribute to the early detection of people with prediabetes mellitus and the prevention of the disease.<br>
